Among Us is a simple yet incredibly entertaining online social game that emphasizes teamwork, communication, and observation. However, when the time comes for you to play as the traitor, it also becomes a true test of your bluffing skills and cunning strategy.

At the start of every match, most participants take on the role of Crewmates who must complete a variety of easy, interactive tasks throughout the session. Meanwhile, a few others are secretly selected to play as Impostors — their objective is to blend in with the group while discreetly eliminating unsuspecting Crewmates and evading suspicion during discussions.
As rounds progress and players begin discovering dead bodies, Crewmates can initiate Emergency Meetings to discuss and vote on who they believe is guilty. The player with the most votes is ejected from the group. Crewmates win if they successfully identify and remove all Impostors, while Impostors win once all Crewmates are eliminated. Either side can also secure victory by completing (Crewmates) or sabotaging (Impostors) the critical systems aboard the map.
| Title | Roles |
|---|---|
| Crewmate | Do tasks, discuss, vote; as a ghost, finish tasks to help a task win. |
| Scientist | Check Vitals anywhere; battery recharges by doing tasks. |
| Engineer | Can use vents briefly; venting has a cooldown (host-configurable). |
| Guardian Angel | After death, ghost can shield a living Crewmate for a short time (lobby setting). |
| Noisemaker | Automatically pings an alarm on death to help track the killer (v2024.6.18). |
| Tracker | Tag and follow a player’s movement on the minimap (v2024.6.18). |
| Shapeshifter | Impostor variant that temporarily morphs into another player. |
| Phantom | Impostor variant that can turn invisible for ambush plays (v2024.6.18). |
| Detective | Crewmate role with notes and Interrogate ability to press suspects (v17.0.0, Sep 2025). |
| Viper | Impostor role that uses acid to dissolve bodies, hiding evidence (v17.0.0, Sep 2025). |
| Ghosts | Crewmate ghosts complete tasks; Impostor ghosts can sabotage (can’t vote/fix sabotages). |
The Crewmate is the most common character role in Among Us. It’s the default assignment given to every participant, aside from a small number who are selected to become Impostors.
Crewmates can explore the ship freely and carry out different maintenance duties to keep the systems operational. Completing all assigned tasks results in a win for the crew, just as identifying and ejecting every Impostor does.
They also have access to specific tools that can make their job easier — such as seeing the position of all players on the map or monitoring important areas through the surveillance camera system.
At any time, Crewmates can call Emergency Meetings to gather everyone together and vote on who they suspect might be the Impostor.
Once a Crewmate dies, they become a ghost that can continue completing tasks and observing the game. Similarly, Impostor ghosts can continue sabotaging but cannot interact with the living players.
Impostors are the deceptive and dangerous ones. Their goal is to kill all Crewmates or sabotage the ship’s vital systems to claim victory. Up to three Impostors are chosen randomly at the start of each round, and every player has an equal chance of being selected, no matter their previous roles.
Impostors can’t perform genuine tasks, but they can fake them to appear innocent. They can also carry out different sabotage actions, from harmless pranks like turning off the lights to life-threatening ones such as damaging oxygen systems that demand immediate repair from Crewmates.
Unlike Crewmates, Impostors can use vents to travel quickly across the map and ambush players who least expect it.
When Crewmates die, they become ghosts and can still complete their remaining tasks, while Impostor ghosts can continue sabotaging the systems.
The Scientist is a specialized version of the Crewmate. Equipped with a unique scanning tool, Scientists can remotely monitor the health status of all players, specifically to check who’s alive or dead from any location on the map. This can help identify Impostors who might be close to their victims.
The major advantage of this scanner is that it immediately shows when someone dies without needing to wait for a body to be reported.
However, the device has limited usage time and must be recharged before it can be activated again.
Engineers stand out as the only Crewmates capable of using vents. They can even hide inside one for up to five seconds, during which they’re completely safe from being killed.
After using a vent, Engineers must wait for a cooldown period or complete a task before they can use it again.
The first Crewmate to die doesn’t become a regular ghost — they transform into a Guardian Angel instead. This acts as a small consolation prize for being eliminated early. Depending on the lobby’s settings, multiple Guardian Angels can exist, determined by how many early victims are allowed to take on this supportive role.
Guardian Angels can still contribute by shielding a chosen Crewmate with a special protective barrier. The shield lasts 30 seconds and has a 60-second cooldown before it can be used again.
Noisemakers have a built-in ability that triggers an alarm automatically when they are killed. This alerts other Crewmates and makes it easier to locate and identify the Impostor responsible.
Trackers possess the ability to follow other players’ movements in real time. This powerful skill can be instrumental in exposing the Impostors’ hidden movements and behavior patterns.
Similar to Crewmates, some Impostors also come with enhanced abilities. The Shapeshifter, for example, can temporarily disguise themselves as any other player on the ship to create confusion and chaos during discussions.
Phantoms have the power to turn completely invisible, allowing them to sneak around undetected and ambush unsuspecting Crewmates for quick kills.
The Detective keeps detailed notes of each case and has access to an Interrogate ability, which allows them to pressure suspects during discussions. This feature was added in version 17.0.0 (September 2025).
Vipers kill using a unique acidic attack that dissolves bodies completely, making them much harder to locate or report. This role was also introduced in version 17.0.0 (September 2025).
Each character in Among Us stands at 3’6” tall, which converts to approximately 1.07 meters.
Among Us characters weigh around 92 pounds, which is roughly 42 kilograms.
Crewmates are not human beings, although they aren’t typical aliens either. Many community theories suggest they originate from Earth and evolved into a unique intelligent species. Others think they might actually be humans mutated by prolonged exposure to space, explaining their small stature and bean-like bodies.
Yes. According to official Among Us lore, Impostors are parasitic shapeshifting aliens. The game’s official website even refers to them explicitly as “parasitic shapeshifters.”
