Chapter 1 NPCs

Horse Yaoguai

The Horse Yaoguai is the first NPC you’ll encounter in Black Wind Mountain, appearing in most chapters of the game. To locate him, defeat Lingxuzi and unlock the Back Hills Shrine. From there, stick to the left-hand wall until you find a small cave entrance marked by two unlit torches. Inside the cave, you’ll find the Horse Yaoguai resting near a meditation spot where you can claim a free Spark. Speak to him and exhaust his dialogue. He will disappear for the rest of Chapter 1 and return in Chapter 2.

Shen Monkey

The Shen Monkey is another key NPC in Chapter 1, vital for upgrading your healing gourd and unlocking Soaks and Drinks to modify its properties. You can find him in the Bamboo Grove area near the Marsh of White Mist shrine. On your way down, a cutscene will show the Shen Monkey tied to a tree by Snake Patrollers. Defeat the enemies to free him and unlock his services. He will relocate to another area later in the game, which will be covered in subsequent chapters.

Chapter 2 NPCs

Xu Dog

Xu Dog is a critical NPC who provides Celestial Medicines to permanently upgrade your stats. Starting his questline also unlocks medicine crafting at any shrine. You can find him near Sandgate Village, close to the Village Entrance Shrine. From the shrine, follow the ridge and take the right path into a cavern where Xu Dog is examining a rock. Speak to him, and he’ll task you with defeating the boss Lang-Li-Guhh-Baw. Defeat the boss in the nearby pit and return to Xu Dog to unlock medicine crafting.

Later, Xu Dog relocates to the Crouching Tiger Temple. To find him, defeat the Tiger Vanguard boss and descend into the temple’s cellar. Here, you can exchange Mind Cores for Celestial Medicine for the rest of the game unless you unlock a secret area in Chapter 3.

Man-in-Stone

The Man-in-Stone is essential for unlocking the Azure Dust Transformation and also serves as a shopkeeper. He’s located in the Fright Cliff area, near the Squall Hideout shrine. Head to the trench on the right, where you’ll find a Rock Guai and the Man-in-Stone. Speak to him, and he’ll ask you to retrieve a treasure.

To complete his task, return to the shrine and take the left path through a cavern. Find a glowing crystal rock and defeat the Mother of Stones boss to collect the quest item. Return to the Man-in-Stone, defeat him in a boss fight, and receive the Azure Dust spell. Rest and return to buy the Sobering Stone, which will be needed for another NPC.

Drunken Boar

The Drunken Boar is also in the Fright Cliff region, near the Rockrest Flat shrine. Break the wooden fence nearby to find him resting on a rock. Speak to him and give him the Sobering Stone, which prompts him to search for meat in the Crouching Tiger Temple. Exhaust his dialogue, then find him upstairs in the temple’s top alcove. Give him a Jade Lotus, obtainable from bodies of water, to progress his story.

To advance further, defeat the First Prince of Flowing Sands in the Valley of Despair. You can trigger this fight by killing the Second Prince first or throwing a Pungent Chunk of Flesh into the boss arena pit. After defeating the First Prince and acquiring the Arhat Gold Piece, return to the Drunken Boar and trigger his boss fight. Defeat him to unlock access to the Kingdom of Sahali.

Horse Yaoguai

In Chapter 2, the Horse Yaoguai reappears in Sandgate Village, tied to a wooden post. Speak to him, defeat the Rock Wolf boss nearby, and return to him. He’ll instruct you to move forward, and you’ll encounter him again in Chapter 3.

Chapter 3 NPCs

Pagoda Realm Prisoner

In the Lower Pagoda Realm, you’ll find a prisoner in one of the cells. To free him, defeat the boss Captain Lotus-Vision, located near the Upper Pagoda shrine. Once the boss is defeated, all cells in the Pagoda Realm will unlock. Progress his story by defeating Captain Wise-Voice, then collect the Spirit of Captain Void-Illusion from the Valley of Ecstasy near the Longevity Road shrine. Finally, defeat Captain Kalpa-Wave at the entrance to New Thunderclap Temple. Return to the prisoner to receive the Chu-Bai Spear weapon and unlock a new Transformation spell.

Fox Guai

The Fox Guai is found in the Forest of Felicity near the Valley of Ecstasy. Interact with a corpse wearing a fox pelt near the shrine. Transform into a Fox using an item provided by the spirit, then confront the boss Non-Void in New Thunderclap Temple. Defeat Non-Void and return to the Fox Guai to receive the Snow Fox Brush.

Treasure Hunter

Located in the Bitter Lake region, the Treasure Hunter can be found near a small temple south of the North Shore shrine. Defeat the Apramana Bats harassing him and exhaust his dialogue. Later, equip the Ring of Fire spell and meet him at the Tower of Karma shrine. After helping him warm up, he’ll direct you to the Green-Capped Martialist boss. Defeat the boss to unlock the Spellbinder spell.

Chen Loong

Chen Loong is found south of the North Shore shrine, standing on water. Speak to him and bring him a pill of immortality, obtainable from Xu Dog at the Cellar shrine. Return to Chen Loong to receive the Ruyi Scroll, which teleports you to Zodiac Village. Xu Dog and Shen Monkey will relocate here.

Horse Yaoguai

The Horse Yaoguai appears again in New Thunderclap Temple, leaning on a pillar on a bridge. Speak to him, exhaust his dialogue, and he’ll move on to Chapter 4.

Chapter 4 NPCs

Horse Yaoguai

In Chapter 4, the Horse Yaoguai is trapped in a cocoon in the Middle Hollow area. Defeat the Centipede Guai boss to free him. Speak to him, and he’ll move to Chapter 5.

Daoist Mi

Found in the secret area of Purple Cloud Mountain near Petalfall Hamlet. Obtain the Violet Hail item from yellow-robed enemies in the hamlet, then return to Daoist Mi to trigger his boss fight. Defeat him to earn the Violet Hail Transformation spell.

Chapter 5 NPCs

Pale-Axe Stalwart

After defeating the Pale-Axe Vanguard boss, he will assist you in destroying the Five Element Carts blocking the main path.
