A developer from Embark Studios has provided additional insight into how the so-called aggression-based matchmaking system functions in ARC Raiders, shedding light on a topic widely discussed in the community as ARC Raiders how player matchmaking works.

“Matchmaking doesn’t depend upon skill or gear score,” explained design lead Virgil Watkins. Instead, the system evaluates how frequently players engage in PvP compared to PvE activities and uses that data to shape the matchmaking balance. Players who tend to avoid PvP encounters are generally less likely to be placed into lobbies filled with highly aggressive players. However, the system does not fully separate these groups, ensuring a mix of playstyles within matches. Below is a breakdown of how Matchmaking Works in ARC Raiders:
Based on earlier comments from CEO Patrick Söderlund, this system clearly aligns with an aggression-based approach. At the same time, Watkins highlighted that there is no complete way for players to opt out of PvP interactions. While your behavior can influence the type of lobby you are placed in, you should still expect to encounter a variety of player approaches during matches.
Embark has also confirmed that they will keep monitoring community feedback and continuously refine the matchmaking system. These ongoing adjustments complement their existing efforts to address issues such as cheating and overall match quality, ensuring a more balanced and enjoyable experience over time.
