Fallout 76 is the latest addition to the famous Fallout franchise and the first one to feature multiplayer gameplay. With Fallout 76 came a brand-new character progression and optimization system. Players can allocate attribute points across Strength, Perception, Endurance, Charisma, Intelligence, Agility, and Luck, while also equipping SPECIAL Perk Cards to unlock additional benefits.
- Every player begins with one point in each of the SPECIAL stats
- You gain one point per level until level 50, for a total of 56 points available
- Each attribute can be leveled up to 15 and only boosted further by food or chems
- Respec options for SPECIAL points do not currently exist
- Each attribute point allows you to slot a single-rank Perk Card of that category, and higher-rank cards require more points in that stat
- You can mix and match Perk Cards freely (e.g., two rank 3 cards or six rank 1 cards)
- Perk Card Packs are awarded at levels 4, 6, 8, 10, and then every 5 levels afterward
- After each level up, you may select a Perk Card from your available collection (your “Deck”) to add to your build
- The Deck consists of cards obtained from packs throughout your playthrough; cards stay permanently, except those with only one rank
- You can pick any Perk Card at level up, regardless of which attribute you increased
- Perk Cards can be swapped at will, making character respecs simple

Tank

As a Tank, your role is to absorb incoming damage for your group. Tanks generally prioritize Strength, Intelligence, and Luck. With high defenses and Power Armor, you can soak up enemy fire with ease. This setup isn’t ideal for lower-level characters, as Power Armor becomes viable only past level 30.
Tanks can wield many different weapon types, though Heavy Guns and melee options tend to dominate. Since your focus is close-quarters combat and drawing enemy fire, you can almost ignore Perception and Endurance. Charisma, however, is vital for team-based perks like Bodyguard and Suppressor.
Priorities as a Tank:
- Power Armor
- Strength
- Intelligence
- Luck
Major Perks:
- Blocker (reduces melee damage taken)
- Bullet Shield (damage reduction while firing Heavy Guns)
- Strong Back (increased carry weight)
- Traveling Pharmacy (reduces weight of chems and Stimpacks)
- Chem Fiend (extends chem duration)
- Bodyguards (damage reduction per team member)
- Magnetic Personality (boosts Charisma in teams)
- Suppressor (reduces target damage)
- Power Patcher (slows Power Armor wear)
- Power User (extends Fusion Core lifespan)
- Stabilized (improves Heavy Gun accuracy and armor penetration in Power Armor)
- Action Boy (increases AP regen)
- Dodgy (damage reduction using AP)
- One Gun Armory (higher chance to stagger or cripple with Heavy Weapons)
Gunslinger/Rifleman

The most adaptable and widely used build type in Fallout 76. Gunslingers and Riflemen can either use Power Armor or light armor, depending on preference. Weapons vary from rifles and laser weapons to shotguns and pistols. Regardless of the chosen weapon, this archetype remains effective. High DPS, mobility, and strong defenses make it an excellent all-around option. Most Gunslinger/Rifleman setups revolve around V.A.T.S. and critical hits.
Priorities as a Rifleman/Gunslinger:
Major Perks:
- Blocker (reduces melee damage taken)
- Concentrated Fire (better V.A.T.S. targeting and damage)
- Gunsmith (weapons degrade slower)
- Action Boy (increases AP regen)
- Adrenaline (damage bonus per kill)
- Evasive (damage reduction scales with Agility)
- Gun Fu (bonus damage on multiple V.A.T.S. targets)
- Better Criticals (boosts V.A.T.S. criticals)
- Critical Savvy (reduces critical meter cost)
- Quick Hands (chance to auto-reload when clip empties)
Medic

Medics specialize in support, excelling in group play. While solo play may feel weaker, Medics are invaluable in teams, healing, reviving, and protecting allies.
Priorities as a Medic:
- Charisma
- Intelligence
- Luck
Major Perks:
- Blocker (reduces melee damage)
- Anti-Epidemic (cures nearby allies of disease)
- Bodyguards (team-based damage reduction)
- E.M.T. (revived allies regain health regen)
- Magnetic Personality (more Charisma in groups)
- Philanthropist (restores allies’ hunger/thirst)
- Team Medic (Stimpacks heal nearby teammates)
- First Aid (Stimpacks heal more)
- Power Patcher (Power Armor durability)
- Suppressor (reduces enemy damage)
- Tenderizer (enemies take extra damage after being hit)
Melee

Melee builds are among the strongest in Fallout 76, especially with lingering V.A.T.S. bugs. You can play melee in two styles: a heavy two-handed Power Armor bruiser with slow but devastating hits, or a nimble one-handed fighter emphasizing speed and agility. The latter is especially effective for solo players thanks to its flexibility.
Priorities as a Melee:
Major Perks:
- Blocker (reduces melee damage taken)
- Martial Artist (lighter melee weapons, faster swings)
- Incisor (ignores enemy armor)
- Makeshift Warrior (slower melee weapon breakage)
- Action Boy (increases AP regen)
- Adrenaline (damage bonus per kill)
- Dodgy (damage reduction with AP cost)
- Evasive (damage reduction scales with Agility)
- Bloody Mess (extra damage and gore)
- Serendipity (chance to avoid damage at low health)
Unarmed

This melee variant relies solely on fists or fist weapons. It’s a challenge-focused playstyle, as you can’t use Power Armor. Still, it’s fully viable, especially for roleplayers. With the Talons mutation, Unarmed builds become especially lethal. Strength, Agility, and Luck are the core stats.
Priorities as an Unarmed:
Major Perks:
- Blocker (reduces melee damage)
- Barbarian (damage reduction from Strength)
- Martial Artist (lighter weapons, faster swings)
- Incisor (ignores armor)
- Iron Fist (increased unarmed damage)
- Ironclad (damage resistance without Power Armor)
- Makeshift Warrior (melee durability)
- Action Boy (AP regen)
- Marathoner (lower AP sprint cost)
- Bloody Mess (extra damage and gore)
- Moving Target (damage reduction while sprinting)
- Nerd Rage (buffs at low health)
- Serendipity (chance to avoid damage at low health)
Looter/Engineer

These builds are niche and focus on maximizing caps, loot, and crafting potential. They perform best in supportive roles rather than solo combat. Engineers thrive by providing ammunition, crafting resources, and setting up camps as an additional income stream.
Priorities as a Looter:
- Strength
- Intelligence
- Charisma
Major Perks:
- Bandolier (reduces ammo weight)
- Blocker (reduces melee damage)
- Martial Artist (faster melee swings, lighter weapons)
- Pack Rat (reduces junk weight)
- Strong Back (carry weight increase)
- Traveling Pharmacy (reduces chem weight)
- Hard Bargain (better vendor prices)
- Magnetic Personality (Charisma boost in teams)
- Contractor (cheaper workshop crafting)
- Ammosmith (more ammo crafted)
- Super Duper (chance to double crafted items)
Demolitionist

Demolitionists are explosion experts. This build caters to players who love chaos and roleplay. Depending on your weapon preference (grenades or heavy guns), you’ll adjust your SPECIAL distribution across Strength, Perception, Intelligence, and Luck.
Priorities as Demolitionist:
- Strength
- Perception
- Intelligence
- Luck
Major Perks:
- Blocker (solid defense in any build)
- Grenadier (larger explosive radius)
- Demolition Expert (up to +100% explosive damage)
- Bloody Mess (damage boost, thematic fit)
- Adrenaline (increases damage after kills)
Sniper

Snipers are a focused variant of Riflemen, built around scoped rifles and long-range combat. You’ll rely on sneak attacks for massive damage, ideally striking from concealed spots. To stay versatile in closer quarters, carry an automatic rifle as backup.
Priorities as a Sniper:
Major Perks:
- Blocker (reduces melee damage)
- Rifleman/Expert/Master Rifleman (non-automatic rifle damage boosts)
- Sniper (better scoped accuracy)
- Tank Killer (rifles ignore armor, stagger chance)
- Ironclad (resistance without Power Armor)
- Covert Operative (boosted sneak damage)
- Evasive (damage resistance scales with Agility)
- Marathoner (lower sprint AP cost)
- Sneak (harder to detect while sneaking)
