The Mahjarrat series has been a staple in OSRS since 2003. When Jagex introduced The Dig Site quest in July 2003, no one could have predicted it would kickstart a beloved questline among Old School RuneScape players. The latest addition to this series, Secrets of the North, was announced during the Winter Summit 2022, a livestream event where Jagex outlined future updates for the MMORPG. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know about completing the Secrets of the North quest.
In Secrets of the North, you’ll join forces with two Mahjarrat—General Khazard and Hazeel—to unravel a murder mystery involving Sir Ceril Carnillean. As with any mystery, there will be several suspects, and you will find yourself among them. This guide will cover everything you will uncover as you progress through the Secrets of the North quest.

Starting Out
To initiate the quest, speak to the guard standing outside the Carnillean mansion in East Ardougne. The easiest way to reach the mansion is by teleporting to the Battlefield via the spirit tree. Once there, the guard will request your help in solving a crime.
Entering the Scene of the Crime
Once inside the mansion, follow the guard upstairs to examine Ceril Carnillean’s body. He has been stabbed in the back with a thin blade. Checking the window reveals that it was broken from the outside.
Interact with the wall to uncover a hidden room, climb the ladder, and inspect a chest. The chest has been forced open, and its contents stolen. After finishing your investigation, report your findings to the guard outside. He will then show you an amulet discovered near the broken window. The amulet bears the Khazard Army’s skull emblem, with ‘Evelot’ engraved on the back. Since the guard is unable to investigate further, he suggests heading to the Fight Arena bar for more information.
Tracking Down Evelot
Head to the Fight Arena bar in the southwest corner, where you’ll meet the Khazard Barman. Bribe him with 100 coins to learn that Evelot recently left in a hurry. Outside the bar, examine the barrels to reveal a trail. Follow it around the arena perimeter until you find Evelot near the Tower of Life. Approaching her triggers an instanced battle.
Evelot primarily attacks with melee and periodically uses a special attack that drains prayer and disables protection prayers. After defeating her, she admits she was hired to steal a scroll from the mansion, but denies any involvement in the murder. She then rushes off to deliver the scroll to the Hazeel cultists.
Conversing With the Cult
Access the Hazeel Cult’s hideout via the Ardougne sewer entrance (east of the Clock Tower). Speak to Hazeel, who confirms that the cult wasn’t responsible for Ceril’s murder. Their only objective was stealing the scroll to aid in Hazeel’s restoration.
Continuing the Investigation
Report back to the guard and speak with the Carnillean family. Henrieta and Philipe provide little insight, but Claus the Chef recalls sensing an eerie cold presence during the murder and seeing a shadow.
In the mansion’s southwest corner, examine a bookshelf to uncover a hidden button that unlocks a secret room in the basement. Inside, use a lockpick to open a chest. The lockpicking puzzle requires aligning the pins correctly—green indicates the correct position, while blue means you are one step off. Unlocking the chest reveals a Dusty Scroll.
Take the scroll to Hazeel and Khazard, who decide it’s time to return to the North. Meet them outside the Weiss colony.
Onwards to North
At Weiss, head north to find Big Fish and Dead Wolf, manifestations of Hazeel and Khazard. Speak to My Arm and Snowflake to gather intel. They report a strange shadow lurking in the nearby mine.
Return to Big Fish and Dead Wolf to discuss your findings. Big Fish reveals that this location was once the Zarosian settlement of Ghorrock in the Second Age. Proceed to the Salt Mine to trigger a cutscene. Bring combat gear and antipoison before entering the cave.
The Fight
Inside the mine, you and Khazard encounter an assassin from Devious Minds, triggering a boss fight.
Boss Fight Tips
- The assassin uses melee and ranged attacks.
- He adapts to protection prayers, so alternate your prayers accordingly.
- Lure him into his own smoke bombs to damage him.
- Avoid green vials, which deal up to 30 poison damage.
After the fight, the assassin disappears.
Exploring the Dungeon
Search the dungeon and collect the following items:
- Duke’s Note
- Lever Handle
- Ancient Map
- Tulia’s Letter
Use these items to acquire the Icy Key, which unlocks the southwest gate in the central room. Beyond the gate, you’ll find a crevice leading to another boss battle.
Meeting the Strange Creature
This shape-shifting creature alternates between melee and ranged forms:
- Brown Carapace = Melee Attacks
- Green Carapace = Ranged Attacks
- Swap weapons accordingly to maximize damage output.
After defeating the creature, it transforms into Jhallan, a Mahjarrat, but an assassin intervenes and captures him. Report the incident to Hazeel and Khazard, then return to East Ardougne to complete the quest.

Here are the rewards you’ll get for completing Secrets of the North:
- 50,000 Thieving XP
- 40,000 Hunter XP
- 60,000 Agility XP
- 2 Quest Points
- Ancient Sceptre
- Saturated Heart
- Access to a repeatable boss (solo only)
The Ancient Sceptre, in particular, is an upgraded version of the ancient staff, and it requires 60 Strength and 70 Magic for you to wield. You can use the sceptre to auto-cast spells from the standard spellbook and Ancient Magicks, making it an excellent weapon for magic users. Plus, it has a passive effect that gives a 10% increase to Ancient Magicks effects.
