It reflects what I’ve been seeing in actual gameplay alongside some of the stats I’ve gathered myself. Tanks are in a much healthier position in this expansion, but you can still make your life easier by choosing a stronger spec for both Mythic+ keys and raids. I’m also covering the strongest Tank specs for complete beginners in WoW so you can better understand what this role is about and how much impact you can have.

I only placed two specs in the S-Tier because right now they feel noticeably stronger than the rest of the field. That said, you can still tank keys and other endgame content on every spec. The real difference is how much pressure you’ll feel while doing it. Personally, I already find tanking a demanding role by default, so I want my class and spec to be as meta as possible. This is how the current Tank rankings for WoW Midnight look:

Brewmaster Monk and Guardian Druid are clearly the top Tanks in WoW Midnight, and both can comfortably clear the highest keys when paired with the right group. I especially enjoy how Guardian Druid plays at the moment.
Honestly, I would still pick it even if it were not sitting in the S-Tier simply because I like the playstyle and the overall class design. At the same time, I genuinely cannot remember the last time Bear felt completely unplayable, because it always seems to find a way to stay strong. Still, going with one of the A-Tier specs is absolutely viable, since results will always depend heavily on how well you pilot the spec and not only on where it lands in the meta.
Choosing the strongest Tank is actually a much harder decision than it looks, especially because the role has far fewer options than DPS. I’ve already settled on the spec I enjoy most, and luckily it’s currently sitting in the S-Tier. I’m seeing that not only from my own experience, but also from available stats and the way PUG groups are being formed and played. These are the best Tank classes in Midnight right now:
These specs feel significantly better than the ones sitting down in the B-Tier. I would recommend them for pushing higher M+ keys and for carrying either your PUGs or your friends’ groups more comfortably. I’ll go over each of the strongest specs listed above in more detail below.
Brewmaster Monk is arguably the best Tank class in WoW because of how flexible it is and how well it balances pure durability with respectable damage. The spec currently has massive self-healing, and Vital Flame is a huge reason why it feels so strong. On top of that, Celestial Fortune adds even more value and often makes you feel nearly impossible to kill. Most of my friends who play Brew say they feel immortal as long as they use their major buttons properly.
Brew is not one of those filler-spam Tank specs. The major interaction I’m talking about is Stagger combined with Purifying Brew, which is really what defines the entire specialization. Fortifying Brew and Celestial Brew are your big “not today” buttons, and when you add in how powerful the self-healing is, it becomes very hard to justify picking a weaker Tank unless you simply love another spec more.
When it comes to damage, these are the main buttons I would highlight for Brew:
These form the foundation of your threat generation and AoE pressure, helping you move through pulls while contributing steady damage that supports your DPS players. Brew is a genuinely enjoyable spec, and I’d recommend it to anyone who likes playing aggressively while still having the tools to survive the random mistakes that happen all the time, especially in higher keys.
Guardian Druid is the strongest Tank in Midnight, in my opinion, mainly because the spec offers what feels like endless self-healing if you manage your buttons correctly. At the same time, it brings solid damage that often puts you surprisingly close to your DPS players on the meters. Druid as a class can look intimidating because it seems to have a million buttons, but Guardian’s actual core gameplay loop is not that complicated once you understand it. Personally, I really enjoy the flow of this spec, and Guardian feels extremely easy to play for me.
Ironfur is your main mitigation button, while Frenzied Regeneration lets you keep patching yourself back up. If you rotate these tools properly, you can live through some of the hardest runs in the game. Trust me, with Bear you’ll spend far more mental energy learning the dungeon than trying to remember some awkward rotation. That matters a lot early in a season, especially when everyone is still figuring things out. You’ll notice the difference quickly. The only real downside is group composition overlap, like Mark of the Wild losing some value if your Healer is already playing Restoration Druid. Still, this spec absolutely belongs in the S-Tier.
Vengeance Demon Hunter is the only spec I’ve placed in the A-Tier in my WoW retail Tank tier list, and to be clear, it is still genuinely strong. It obviously trails behind Brewmaster Monk and Guardian Druid, but the biggest improvement is that the spec plays much more simply now. Fel Devastation is a great example of that, since you’re no longer punished as hard if you fail to use it perfectly. The overall skill ceiling has dropped a lot compared to previous expansions.
That said, simpler definitely does not mean weak. I see plenty of players performing really well on Vengeance DH while staying extremely tanky and bringing strong overall output. A lot of that comes from the apex talent Untethered Rage. Between the free procs and the extra Metamorphosis uptime, you’ll often feel like you’re sitting in an almost unkillable state. All of that gives the spec real value and secures its A-Tier placement, but it still can’t quite compete with the two monsters sitting at the very top of the current Tank rankings in WoW Midnight that I covered earlier.
Guardian Druid is the best Tank for beginners in Midnight, and it was also the spec I started with myself back in the day. You’ll appreciate it not only because it is such a reliable Tank, but also because it deals excellent single-target damage. That means faster boss kills, cleaner threat control, and far less stress whenever you end up alone. It’s a spec that feels good in almost every situation, and as a new player in WoW, you’re going to face a lot of different situations.
The biggest reason I say “yes” to Bear is that the rotation is never overly complicated, yet you still perform your role exactly as you should. Instead of constantly staring at your bars and wondering what to press next, you can focus on the things that actually matter: learning pulls, knowing when to kite, understanding routes, and handling the flow of the dungeon.
The second-best Tank spec for beginners to try is Protection Paladin. I’m serious about that, and you can already see players debating whether Prot Paladin or Prot Warrior is the better option in this meta. Prot Paladin feels like a superhero in PUGs because the spec is so self-sufficient and has an answer for almost everything that can go wrong. The only reason I didn’t rank Prot Pal higher in my tier list is because of the most recent Midnight changes. Right now, the spec has become very squishy, even if you choose Sentinel. Still, you retain your defining buttons, such as:
And I could keep going for a while, because you also have tools like Consecration and Shield of the Righteous bringing solid AoE damage into the mix. Overall, I would still recommend giving this spec a try even though I currently have it placed in the B-Tier. I’m fairly sure that will change in future patches, and I expect it to return to the meta again. Once you feel more comfortable with the Tank role in WoW by starting on Guardian Druid, Protection Paladin is absolutely worth trying next.
