The X Marks the Spot OSRS quest is an introductory quest for the Great Kourend series. This entry-level quest serves as a simple and engaging introduction to the Great Kourend questline. It’s ideal for new adventurers in Old School RuneScape who are just getting started with the Lumbridge-based treasure hunt storyline.
X Marks the Spot OSRS Requirements
There aren’t many prerequisites for this short quest, which is part of its charm. You’ll need at least one free inventory slot and a spade to dig up the clues. If you’re a member, having an Amulet of Glory makes travel more convenient by letting you teleport straight to Draynor Village. A stamina or energy potion can also come in handy for quicker movement during the hunt.
X Marks the Spot OSRS Step-by-Step Quest Guide
To begin the quest, speak with Veos at The Sheared Ram pub located in Lumbridge. Veos will tell you he ended up in Lumbridge while following a treasure map that originated from Great Kourend. Since he's unfamiliar with the local terrain, he’ll request your help and hand over a scroll to begin the adventure.
The Treasure Scroll’s First Clue
Your first clue says: “Within the town of Lumbridge lives a man named Bob. He walks out of his door and takes 1 step east, 7 steps north, 5 steps west and 1 step south. Once he arrives, he digs a hole and buries his treasure.” To follow this, go to Bob’s Brilliant Axes and retrace these steps from his front door.
After following the directions, use your spade to dig. The correct location is just north of the northwestern window of Bob’s house. You’ll uncover the next piece of the scroll here.
The Second Scroll Clue
This time, the clue is visual—it’s a map pointing to a spot behind the Lumbridge Castle kitchen. Head to the tile southwest of the crate near the castle’s kitchen and dig. Here, you’ll find a mysterious orb, which leads to the next stage.
The Third Scroll Clue
This orb is a hot-and-cold tracker, guiding you to your next dig site. As you walk, you can “feel” the orb to check how close you are. Its responses are based on direct distance—not obstacles.
The target location is just east of Draynor Village. Go to the southern edge of the wheat field near Leela, and find the bush located to the north. This is your digging spot. If you have an Amulet of Glory, teleport to Draynor and walk northeast to reach it easily. Be cautious of the guards if your combat level is still low.
The Final Scroll Clue
This last clue is a Caesar cipher. To decode it, count the letter frequencies or use any Caesar shift decryption method. But if you’re just looking for the answer, here it is: “DRAYNOR PIG PEN.”
Travel to the pig pen in Draynor, where Martin the Gardener resides. Dig in the middle of the pen to uncover an ancient casket that emits an eerie whisper.
Finishing the Quest
With the casket in hand, head over to Port Sarim. Go to the northernmost dock and find Veos near The Rusty Anchor pub. Hand him the casket. He’ll claim there’s nothing of importance inside—though you can be sure this story continues in later quests. Congratulations, you’ve now completed X Marks the Spot!
X Marks the Spot OSRS Quest Rewards
Upon completion, you’ll receive 1 Quest Point and 200 coins. You’ll also earn an Antique Lamp that grants XP to any skill of your choice. Additionally, a beginner clue scroll will be added to your inventory—if you don’t already have one.
If you completed the quest before beginner clues were introduced, you can still claim one by speaking to Veos again in Port Sarim. Make sure you speak to the correct version of Veos—don’t go to the one in Port Piscarilius, or you won’t receive your scroll.
Conclusion
X Marks the Spot is the perfect starting point for diving into the Client of Kourend storyline and exploring the expansive lore of OSRS. Originally launched in February 2019, the quest brought about some minor yet controversial changes to Lumbridge and Draynor Village. Still, it remains a quick and rewarding adventure for all players.
If you're planning to take on more quests or level up faster, having enough OSRS gold can make your journey a lot smoother. Whether it’s for gear upgrades, teleport tabs, or quest items, gold is essential. You can safely purchase OSRS gold at Gamer Choice, your trusted platform for fast and secure RuneScape transactions. Start your journey fully prepared!
