Select your Specialization
In this Balance Druid guide, we will dive into the details of playing this specialization. The Balance Druid, often referred to as Boomie or Boomkin, consistently ranks among the top classes for Mythic+ due to its impressive AoE damage output. While it may not have the highest single-target (ST) damage, it still holds a strong position in raids thanks to its overall utility and performance.
Table of Contents
The Balance specialization provides a simple but rewarding rotation, making it great for new players while still maintaining a level of depth to keep older, more experienced players engaged and competitive. It performs well on multiple target encounters and decently on single target fights but has other skill sets and a raid buff it brings to balance out some of its less viable encounter types.
Balance Druids shine on multiple target fights due to their ability to multi-DoT and hit every target. However, while Balance Druid multi-target is strong, it still requires some set-up/ramp-up time and is not considered burst damage. This can lead to Balance Druids being less optimal when your group needs to burst many targets.
For single-target, Balance Druids do not do great damage over a long period of time, making them weaker for single-target-oriented bosses. The rotation for single-target is more linear than that of multi-target, requiring less prep time and less knowledge of the fight. You cast generator abilities to gain Astral Power and then spend your resources on spells depending on the type of encounter you are in.
The other main goal of the rotation is to cycle through Eclipse, your main buff. There are several talents influenced by entering or leaving Eclipse, which incentivizes you to always be in an Eclipse state.
Strengths
Weaknesses
Balance Druid has a single target and multi-target rotation, which both require good DoT uptime and proper building and spending of Astral Power. Cooldowns should be used as they come up unless they can be used at a better opportunity without losing a use over the period.
Balance Druid has an Eclipse cycle-based gameplay loop. Your main Eclipse will depend on how many targets you can hit. Enter Solar Eclipse on 1 and 2 targets and Lunar Eclipse on the rest. Wrath is cast in Solar Eclipse, and Starfire in Lunar Eclipse. During Celestial Alignment, you will be affected by both Solar and Lunar Eclipse, and you will cast Wrath. On more than 3 targets, you will cast Starfire.
On a single target, you will use your cooldowns as they come up or when you can stack multiple cooldowns together. You will use Starsurge as your way of spending Astral Power. On multiple targets, you will instead cast Starfall as your main way to spend Astral Power.
If you are a beginner, you should head over to the Easy Mode page as well as the Spell Summary page to brush up on the basics. There, you will learn what each spell does and how you can start learning your rotation.
When leveling, equip the highest item level gear available. Since gear is frequently replaced while leveling, you can focus solely on item level without worrying about secondary stats.
In open-world content or dungeons, Balance Druid follows a simple builder-spender rotation. The core mechanic is rotating between Eclipses, which last 15 seconds and require two spell casts to transition after expiring.
Apply your DoTs (Moonfire and Sunfire) to your target, then cast the Eclipse-appropriate filler (Wrath for Solar and Starfire for Lunar). Once you have enough Astral Power, use a spender—Starsurge for single targets or Starfall for multiple targets.
Balance Druid cooldowns come from the talent tree. Celestial Alignment is the primary cooldown, granting the benefits of both Eclipse states, allowing free spell selection and enhancing all abilities. In single-target situations, continue casting Wrath, while in multi-target scenarios, prioritize Starfire.
Copy the Balance Druid talents, paste them into the game.
War Mode is an optional feature that provides various benefits when enabled:
Enabling War Mode is recommended for leveling and PvE content to maximize rewards and experience. However, it also makes you vulnerable to open-world PvP, meaning there is a risk of being attacked by other players.
Below are the best PvP Talents for leveling and solo/small group PvE. These choices may not be optimal for actual PvP situations.
The Keeper of the Grove build is highly versatile, centered around the use of Force of Nature. This build offers flexibility, enabling burst damage and shorter cooldown windows for priority damage or vulnerability phases.
The Elune's Chosen Hero Talent Tree focuses on Arcane damage, emphasizing spells such as Fury of Elune and New Moon.
Keeper of the Grove is the top-performing Mythic+ talent setup. It provides a balanced mix of burst, sustained, and boss damage essential for dungeons. Its primary advantage is the frontloaded burst, making it easier to ramp into each pack with Treants of the Moon.
Elune's Chosen excels in keys with longer-lasting pulls. The Fury of Elune into Orbital Strike followed by a second Fury of Elune creates a powerful 8-second burst window for handling dangerous packs. This build demands more activity than Keeper of the Grove to maximize Lunation usage.
The stat priority for a Balance Druid is as follows:
Mastery is generally the best secondary stat, with the exception that Haste can surpass it when playing Elune's Chosen. Always simulate your character before investing in new gems or enchants.
Stat priority is dynamic. Every gear swap, socket addition, or enchantment change can alter its ranking. If you neglect a stat too much, its value increases until it surpasses others. Using Top Gear on Raidbots provides the most accurate insight into upgrades.
Intellect is strong enough that item level is usually a good indicator of an upgrade. If two items have the same level, choose the one with Mastery when possible. However, simming remains the best method for precise gear choices.
Rings and necks do not have Intellect, so lower item-level jewelry can sometimes be better due to superior stats.
There is no fixed item-level value assigned to a socketed piece. The impact depends on the type of gear and the gem used. For close comparisons, sim your gear to determine the best choice.
Intellect is your primary stat and should be prioritized in all upgrades. It increases your Spell Power, which directly boosts the damage of your spells.
Mastery enhances the damage of your Nature and Arcane spells. This effect is further increased when the target is afflicted by Sunfire or Moonfire, making it a key stat for sustained damage.
Haste improves your casting speed and increases Astral Power generation by allowing you to cast more spells in a shorter time.
Critical Strike increases your chance to deal critical hits with spells and abilities. While powerful, its effectiveness can be inconsistent due to its random nature, making it more situational.
Versatility boosts all damage and healing done while also reducing incoming damage. While often undervalued, it becomes more important in high-end content like raid progression and Mythic+ dungeons where survivability is crucial.
Balance Druid follows a build-and-spend playstyle with a predictable rotation cadence.
At the start of combat or with each use of Celestial Alignment / Incarnation: Chosen of Elune, you choose between Solar or Lunar Eclipse. Entering Solar Eclipse requires casting two Starfires, while entering Lunar Eclipse requires casting two Wraths.
Once in Eclipse, you generate Astral Power using the appropriate filler. In Solar Eclipse, cast Wrath to build Astral Power. In Lunar Eclipse, cast Starfire. Each Eclipse lasts 15 seconds, and maintaining high uptime is crucial.
For single-target, spend Astral Power on Starsurge (costs 40 Astral Power). For multi-target, use Starfall (costs 50 Astral Power). Some abilities, like Rattle the Stars and Elune's Guidance, reduce these costs.
Keep your DoTs active on all targets to benefit from your Mastery bonus. Use cooldowns optimally—either on cooldown or when the situation demands.
Once you master the basics, focus on cooldown usage, buff management, and maximizing uptime on key buffs.
Balance Druid enters Eclipse based on target count, meaning the number of enemies you can hit with Wrath and Starfire. Follow these Eclipse rules:
If there are 10 targets, but only 2 are within your cleave range, you should enter Solar Eclipse for higher Astral Power generation.
Warrior of Elune is used to enter Solar Eclipse quickly. Use 2 charges to enter Solar Eclipse and hold the last charge for mobility or when inside Incarnation: Chosen of Elune. If not needed, let the final charge expire.
The following is the recommended opening rotation for Balance Druid. This can also serve as a cooldown priority list. Keep in mind that from max range, Wrath has a 4-second travel time.
Cooldown usage should be prioritized within other cooldowns, but the same logic applies if used outside of the most optimal scenarios.
If you need to move and do not have Astral Power or other instant cooldowns available, reapply your DoTs. Moonfire does additional on-hit damage if you have to spam a spell.
Balance Druid's general priorities and rules persist through the multi-target rotation. You will still keep your DoTs up, enter the appropriate Eclipse based on which generator you are using, and use cooldowns as they become available or when they are best used.
Balance Druid does not have many burst damage options, with the exception of Warrior of Elune with Starfire. However, Balance Druids excel at sustained multi-target damage due to their DoTs, Starfall, Fury of Elune, and all the various talents that enhance these abilities.
Your first priority is to activate Balance Druid Mastery, which requires keeping your DoTs on the target:
You may order your use of spells depending on the position of each enemy. For spells like Sunfire or Fury of Elune, it may be beneficial to wait until all targets are gathered.
Balance Druid has several cooldown options in The War Within. The main cooldown referenced in this guide is Celestial Alignment, which can be upgraded by the talent Incarnation: Chosen of Elune. You will want to use these immediately every time they come off cooldown to maximize their effectiveness.
Cooldowns should be stacked together. If possible, use Celestial Alignment in combination with other cooldowns, such as Convoke the Spirits or Fury of Elune, as this will amplify the effectiveness of all these abilities. These cooldowns are intended to provide the highest damage output per cast compared to your regular spells.
Some cooldowns come in the form of charge-based spells, such as Wild Mushroom and New Moon. You should aim to avoid letting their charges cap, as this is equivalent to not using another spell when it is off cooldown. Keep their charges rolling even if it is not always the most efficient use of time.
We highly recommend using Raidbots to simulate your character's ideal gems and enchants, as they may differ from our general recommendations.
The best stats for Balance Druid are Haste and Mastery. The goal is to optimize stats while making the most of the new Prismatic Gem.
You should use Culminating Blasphemite in one socket. Then, ensure you have one gem of each type in other sockets. For single-target encounters, prioritize Mastery, while in multi-target situations, you may prefer more Haste.
Depending on your content and Hero Talent Tree choice, you will fill out the remaining slots with Masterful Emerald.
The default flask for most situations is Flask of Alchemical Chaos.
The best potion is Tempered Potion.
The best weapon imbuement is Algari Mana Oil.
During encounters, you can heal yourself using Algari Healing Potion and Healthstone. Make sure to use these when in danger of dying.
For close progression pulls or for maximizing your damage, you can also use a Crystallized Augment Rune.
Feast of the Divine Day or Feast of the Midnight Masquerade should be used in raids or dungeons if possible. Otherwise, Stuffed Cave Peppers offers main stat and stamina, making it a great choice for all content. The feast significantly outperforms other food options.

The best embellishments depend on the type of content you are engaging in.
Raiding consists of high-uptime fights where you stay in combat for extended periods. For this reason, we recommend:
Since these activities consist of smaller pulls and some downtime, we recommend:
Crafted gear is more flexible in The War Within, allowing you to tailor your stats. Generally, you should craft items with Mastery and Haste using Algari Missive of the Feverflare.
Your damaging spells have a chance to hit a Jackpot!, growing a Wild Mushroom at a nearby enemy's location at 100% effectiveness. Casting Celestial Alignment or Incarnation: Chosen of Elune always hits a Jackpot!
You should equip the 2-piece bonus as soon as you acquire the necessary pieces. Once equipped, you must have Wild Mushroom or Sunseeker Mushroom talented to proc the Jackpot effect. The 2-piece bonus provides approximately a 6% damage increase on single target and is even more valuable in multi-target scenarios.
Starfall and Starsurge damage against targets affected by your Wild Mushroom damage-over-time effect is increased by 20%.
The 4-piece bonus provides about a 4% damage increase on single target. While you can track the Fungal Growth debuff to optimize its usage, it should be up frequently enough to consistently enhance your Astral Power spenders.
This macro casts Rebirth on your mouseover target if they are a friendly player. Otherwise, it casts Rebirth on your current target.
Using this macro will cast Remove Corruption on your mouseover target, if they are a friendly player and they are not dead. Otherwise, it will cast Remove Corruption.
This macro will place you in Moonkin Form, but now lets you double press and leave Moonkin Form. You may need a Keybind to return to human form, depending on what you need to cast.
When using Convoke the Spirits, you want to immediately start casting after the channel is complete to minimize downtime. Use this addon so you can still spam your next spell. I just used Starsurge as an example.
The macro below can be altered given any extra off GCD abilities.
Here are some of the utility-driven mouseover macros you can use.
At cursor macros save you an extra click and place certain spells at your cursor.
The next two macros are good for multi-dotting new targets using their unit frames without swapping off of your main target.
WeakAuras is an essential tool for Balance Druid and DPS players, offering unparalleled customization to enhance your gameplay. Rather than focusing on specific examples, we recommend exploring Wago.io, where you’ll find an extensive library of WeakAuras to suit your needs.
If you are unfamiliar with WeakAuras, it is an incredibly powerful and widely-used AddOn that allows you to create custom displays for nearly everything in the game. This includes tracking buffs, debuffs, cooldowns, Focus, resources, and much more.
To import a WeakAura, visit Wago.io and select one that fits your preferences. Click the "Copy WeakAura Import String" button to copy it to your clipboard. Next, log into the game and type /wa
in the chat box to open the WeakAuras interface. Navigate to the "Import" section, press Ctrl+V to paste the copied string, and click "Import". You’re ready to go!
Mastering WeakAuras and customizing it to your playstyle is highly recommended for any serious raider. With countless options available on Wago.io, you can tailor your interface to optimize your performance and focus on what truly matters in combat.
For Horde players, Zandalari Troll offers the best performance. On the Alliance side, Night Elf is the optimal choice. For utility-focused options, Highmountain Tauren or Worgen can provide additional mobility benefits.
No, DoTs like Moonfire, Sunfire, and Stellar Flare do not snapshot with any abilities or buffs. Instead, they dynamically update based on your character's current power, meaning changes in buffs or entering/leaving Eclipse will immediately affect their damage.
Balance Druids excel in raid encounters due to their strong single-target damage and powerful AoE capabilities. They also provide valuable utility through abilities like Typhoon, Solar Beam, and Innervate, which supports healers.
While Balance Druids are versatile and effective in a variety of scenarios, they may underperform in lower-difficulty content like dungeons where instant damage abilities dominate. This class requires a moderate skill level but is highly rewarding when mastered.
"Double-dipping" occurs when a spell benefits from the same effect twice. Balance Druids experience this through their Mastery and Astral Damage mechanics.
Mastery increases damage for the active Eclipse type—Arcane damage during Lunar Eclipse and Nature damage during Solar Eclipse. During Celestial Alignment, both Eclipses are active simultaneously, allowing Astral spells like Starsurge, Starfall, and Fury of Elune to benefit from Mastery twice. This interaction significantly boosts their damage output.
No, there are no fixed Haste caps for Balance Druids. All damage-over-time effects, such as Moonfire and Sunfire, scale dynamically with your Haste and other stats. While minor Haste breakpoints can occur during Eclipse, these are so frequent that they can generally be ignored.
