This spectral moose carries deep ties to the Highmountain Tauren heritage and stands out among mount collectors not because it is mechanically difficult to obtain, but because of how limited its availability is. If players fail to complete the required quest during its active period, they can end up waiting months before they get another opportunity.
Unlike traditional mounts that can be farmed repeatedly every week or endlessly through RNG attempts, Spirit of Eche'ro is locked behind a very specific Legion Archaeology quest rotation that only becomes available for a short period twice every year. Because of this, dedicated collectors often track the rotation schedule well in advance to avoid missing the event window. The good news is that once the quest becomes active, the mount itself is fully guaranteed. The only real challenge is completing the Archaeology grind before the event disappears again.

The Spirit of Eche'ro mount is earned through the Legion Archaeology quest called Laying to Rest. This special quest only becomes available for a limited two-week period and returns approximately once every six months through the Legion Archaeology rotation system.
Once the quest is active, the mount reward itself is guaranteed. There is absolutely no RNG tied to the mount drop. Instead, the primary obstacle comes from the amount of time needed to gather all required quest materials before the event expires. Players who miss the active period must wait until the quest cycles back into rotation again.
Your first objective is reaching the Legion version of Dalaran. The fastest method is using the Dalaran Hearthstone toy if you already have it unlocked. Otherwise, you can use the portal to Azsuna from your faction capital and manually travel southeast toward Dalaran.
If you have access to a Druid character, the overall grind becomes much more convenient thanks to instant Flight Form. Since the process involves repeatedly traveling between dig sites, the extra mobility significantly speeds up fragment farming.
After arriving in Dalaran, head to the Archaeology trainer Dariness the Learned. Players who have not yet learned the Archaeology profession must do so before continuing. She provides the introductory quest called The Right Path.

Once you accept The Right Path, you will be sent to Highmountain to meet Lessah Moonwater in Thunder Totem. She can be found on the upper section of the settlement.
Talking to Lessah Moonwater unlocks the main Archaeology quest Laying to Rest, which is the quest directly tied to obtaining the Spirit of Eche'ro mount.

The core part of the grind involves collecting 600 Bone Fragment of Eche'ro. These fragments are gathered through Archaeology dig sites located throughout Highmountain.
At all times, three separate dig sites will remain active within the zone. Make sure Archaeology dig sites are enabled on your world map through the map filter settings. Once enabled, the sites appear as shovel icons across Highmountain.
Inside each dig site, use the Archaeology ability Survey to locate buried finds. The telescope shown by Survey points toward the correct direction, while the color of the light determines your proximity to the target. Red indicates you are far away, yellow means you are getting closer, and green signals that you are near the fragment location.
Once you are close enough, a glowing shovel appears on the ground and your character receives the buff called Standing On It.
Every successful excavation rewards anywhere between 0 and 5 Bone Fragments. During the process, hostile Tauren spirits may also appear while digging. Defeating these enemies provides additional fragments, helping speed up progress slightly.
Depending on your efficiency, travel speed, server competition, and luck with fragment drops, the full grind usually takes somewhere between 3 and 6 hours to complete.
After gathering all 600 Bone Fragment of Eche'ro, return to Lessah Moonwater in Thunder Totem and complete the quest turn-in.
Finishing Laying to Rest rewards the Spirit of Eche'ro mount immediately. After learning the mount, it becomes permanently unlocked across your entire Battle.net account.
Spirit of Eche'ro is only obtainable twice per year because Legion Archaeology quests rotate every two weeks from a total pool of thirteen different quests. Missing the active rotation means waiting until the quest eventually returns again later in the cycle.
Below are the upcoming availability windows for the quest rotation. These dates use North American reset schedules, while European resets begin one day afterward.
