Herblore is one of the priciest skills in Old School RuneScape. The main reason for this is that the fastest and most effective way to train Herblore involves creating potions using herbs, vials of water, and secondary ingredients, which comes at a high cost. While there are alternative training methods that can yield profits, they tend to be significantly slower and are mostly pursued by those aiming to earn gold or by Ironman players.
Requirements
Herblore is a members-only skill, and before you can start training it, you must complete the quest “Druidic Ritual.” This quest is straightforward and requires raw beef, raw chicken, raw rat meat, and raw bear meat. If your combat level is low, bringing food is recommended since the creatures in the Taverley Dungeon may attack you during the quest.

Levels 1-12: Attack Potions
To progress from level 3 to level 12, you’ll need to create 57 attack potions. This involves combining unfinished guam potions with eyes of newt.
Ironman
As an Ironman, collecting ingredients for attack potions is relatively straightforward compared to other recipes. Eyes of newt can be purchased in bulk from Betty’s rune shop in Port Sarim, while grimy guam can be obtained from low-level monsters like goblins, cave bugs, or chaos druids. Alternatively, you can grow guam herbs using farming.
Levels 12-22: Strength Potions
To reach level 22, you need to create 144 strength potions by combining unfinished tarromin potions with limpwurt roots.
Ironman
Grimy tarromin can be sourced from herb runs or monster drops. Degrime them to make unfinished potions. Limpwurt roots can be obtained by planting them in flower patches during herb runs.
Levels 26-38: Energy Potions
Making 322 energy potions is required to achieve level 38. These are created by combining unfinished harralander potions with chocolate dust.
Ironman
To make chocolate dust, grind chocolate bars using a knife or pestle and mortar. You can buy chocolate bars from various shops, with Ardougne and Nardah shops being convenient due to their proximity to banks.
Levels 38-45: Prayer Potions
To advance to level 45, create 356 prayer potions by combining unfinished ranarr potions with snape grass. This is an investment-heavy method but provides decent returns due to high demand.
Ironman
For Ironman players, prayer potions are invaluable. Ranarr seeds can be obtained from master farmers or monster drops, while snape grass can be grown in allotments or collected from spawns around Gielinor.
Levels 45-52: Super Attack
From level 45, you’ll need to make 622 super attack potions using unfinished irit potions and eyes of newt.
Ironman
Ironman players can farm irit herbs and use them to create unfinished potions. Alternatively, you can pay Zahur in Nardah 200 coins per potion to save time, provided you’ve completed the hard Desert Diary.
Levels 52-55: Super Energy
Create 366 super energy potions using unfinished avantoe potions and mort myre fungus.
Ironman
Collecting mort myre fungus requires a blessed silver sickle, which you can obtain during the Nature Spirit quest. Use the bloom ability near logs in the Mort Myre swamp to gather fungus efficiently.
Levels 55-63: Super Strength
To progress to level 63, you’ll need to make 1,616 super strength potions using kwuarm potions (unf) and limpwurt roots.
Levels 63-69: Super Restore
Make 2,102 super restore potions using snapdragon potions (unf) and red spiders’ eggs. While this method is costly, it’s effective for fast leveling.
Ironman
Snapdragon seeds are rare and can be obtained from monster drops. Red spiders’ eggs can be collected from spawns or bosses like Sarachnis.
Levels 69-72: Antifire Potions
Combine lantadyme potions (unf) with dragon scale dust to create 1,468 antifire potions.
Ironman
Grind dragon scales, which can be collected from blue dragons, to create dragon scale dust.
Levels 72-76: Ranging Potions
To reach level 76, make 2,691 ranging potions by combining dwarf weed potions (unf) with wine of Zamorak.
Ironman
Wine of Zamorak can be obtained by collecting it from spawns or creating it through the Tithe Farm.
Levels 76-81: Magic Potions
From level 76, create 4,965 magic potions using lantadyme potions (unf) and potato cactus. This method is cost-intensive but provides solid XP.
Ironman
Plant potato cacti early in the farming guild to ensure a steady supply for this grind.
Levels 81-99: Saradomin Brews
The quickest method to level 99 is making 60,232 Saradomin brews by combining crushed bird nests with unfinished toadflax potions. This will cost over 110 million GP.
Ironman
Bird nests can be obtained from birdhouse runs or Giant Mole drops. Toadflax can be grown during herb runs.
A Less Click-Intensive Option
From level 77 onwards, stamina potions provide a less click-intensive training method. Using amylase crystals as a stackable secondary ingredient allows for making 27 potions per inventory, reducing banking time. While this method is slower than others, it costs less overall, making it a viable alternative for those looking to save money.
