If you’ve ever wondered why the saying is “fight fire with fire” and not “fight everything with fire,” then WoW The War Within Fire Mage might just be the perfect specialization for you. In this Fire Mage guide, we’ll cover everything from rotation and skills to hero talents, gear, consumables, and more aspects of this spec’s gameplay.

The Fire specialization is fantastic at delivering both burst and sustained damage on a variety of fight types. Fire can cleave on stacked targets, gaining overall damage without sacrificing any single-target damage. It can also do good AoE damage on stacked enemies and has uncapped AoE DPS, however, comes at a loss in single target. Like all Mage specializations, Fire has high mobility and is fantastic at doing encounter-specific jobs and baiting mechanics. Between Blink, Shimmer or Ice Floes, Hot Streak, and Scorch, high movement encounters have minimal impact on Fire's overall output.

Fire Mage is all about chaining critical strikes to trigger Hot Streak. The main way to do this is by converting Heating Ups into Hot Streak via Fire Blast. Most of your time will be spent casting Fireball and converting the critical strikes from that via Fire Blasts into Hot Streaks and using those on Pyroblast.
Fire Mages are one of the few specs in the game that have spells that can be cast during other casts. Fire Blast is the main spell you will be casting during other spells, but Fire's main DPS cooldown, Combustion, can also be cast during other spells.
Combustion is Fire's major DPS cooldown, which allows for a period of heavy burst by making all your spells critically strike, causing a large amount of Hot Streaks in a short period.
A new Hero Talent specific tier set was added for Fire Mage. Bonuses vary depending on the chosen Hero Talent. While there are minor numerical changes to spells, none of these changes meaningfully alter rotations. Overall, Fire spells deal slightly more damage, while Mastery: Ignite deals slightly less.
Most pages in the guide, including Rotation, Talents, and Gear pages, were updated to reflect these changes and the new optimal strategies.
Fire Mage is relatively strong in outdoor content when you can execute massive pulls during Combustion and quickly eliminate all enemies. However, it struggles when enemies are spread out, as Fire takes some time to ramp up its damage and is not very effective at frequent target swapping. Unfortunately, these downsides also apply to dungeons, where enemies often die quickly. Due to this, the best leveling strategy is usually to focus on questing.
When leveling, always prioritize the piece of gear with the highest item level. The only exception is Rings or Necklaces—if a slightly lower item level piece has two secondary stats instead of one, it may be preferable.

With these benefits, enabling War Mode is recommended to maximize leveling speed and rewards. However, keep in mind that this also enables PvP combat, meaning you may be attacked by players of the opposite faction while leveling or completing World Quests.
Sunfury, especially when combined with Unleashed Inferno, is generally preferred over Frostfire for raiding performance. While both Frostfire and Sunfury can achieve nearly the same results, the Frostfire variant is significantly harder to execute perfectly, making Sunfury the easier and more reliable choice.
Sunfury, especially when combined with Unleashed Inferno, is currently significantly better than Frostfire for Mythic+ performance. There is a Frostfire + Unleashed Inferno build, but the only version that comes even remotely close to the Sunfury variant is much harder to play and still performs worse.
All of the secondary (non-Intellect) stats are relatively close in value despite their order on our list, except for Haste, which is generally much better than the rest. We encourage players to sim themselves if possible to determine which stats to aim for based on their current distribution, as this may change depending on current values. A deficiency in one stat often increases its relative value until a "normalized" balance is reached. Due to this, we strongly recommend using Raidbots Top Gear to optimize your gearing choices (see our Raidbots guide).
Secondary stats have diminishing returns, meaning as you stack more of a stat, it requires increasingly more rating to gain 1% more of that stat. The reduction follows this pattern:
You cannot exceed 126% from gear rating. While most of this can be ignored, it emphasizes the importance of using simulations to determine optimal stats. We highly recommend using Raidbots Top Gear to help you choose the best gear, as it automatically handles these complexities for you.
Intellect is your primary stat, providing Spell Power which increases the damage of your spells.
Critical Strike increases your chance to critically hit, boosting your chances to trigger instant-cast Pyroblast.
Mastery, through Mastery: Ignite, increases the damage of your Mastery: Ignite DoT.
Haste reduces the cast time of your spells, affects the cooldown of Fire Blast, and speeds up the detonation of Living Bomb.
Versatility offers a flat-out increase to damage dealt and a reduction to damage taken.
We want to enter Combustion in the following way:
Follow the priority list below while Combustion is active.
If you are not running Firestarter: Pre-cast Pyroblast into Phoenix Flames. Then go into the Combustion rotation.
If you are running Firestarter:
There are 2 main AoE rotations: one where you simply follow your single-target rotation and let Mastery: Ignite handle the cleave, and another based around Flamestrike.
When running the cleave-based build, your AoE rotation is exactly the same as the single-target rotation. Mastery: Ignite will automatically spread, while Living Bomb (from Lit Fuse and related talents) and Firefall do significant AoE damage. Various other talents will also deal incidental AoE damage. Simply follow the single-target rotation.
The only exception is when enemies are low on health and near death. In these cases, use Flamestrike to quickly finish off the low-health enemies and then return to the single-target rotation.
The Flamestrike based build is straightforward as well. Follow the single-target rotation, with one key difference: Any time you would normally use Pyroblast, you instead cast Flamestrike. This applies only when there are 5 or more targets. On 3 or fewer targets, continue using the single-target rotation even when running the Flamestrike-based AoE build.
Understanding how to generate Critical Strikes efficiently is crucial to mastering Fire Mage. This specialization is designed to crit frequently, so learning how to execute the right combos to create a chain of crits is essential.
Whenever you get a Heating Up proc, you should convert it into a Hot Streak using Fire Blast. After that, you will want to cast a Fireball and immediately spend your Hot Streak on a Pyroblast as your Fireball cast finishes. Both of these spells will strike at the same time, giving a chance for an immediate follow-up Hot Streak if both critically strike. If only one of the spells critically strikes, Heating Up will proc, allowing you to immediately use Fire Blast and repeat the process.
There is a 0.2-second grace period where Heating Up will not be canceled if two spells impact simultaneously and only one critically strikes. This grace window is why it's so important to always cast Fireball into Pyroblast, as normally, if only one of them crits and the other does not, you would lose the Heating Up. But by casting both at the same time, if only one crits, you still keep your Heating Up.
This technique is called "Pyroblast Fishing" or "Pyroblast Chaining," and it's the best way to create a large chain of crits. The only exception to this rule is during Combustion, where all spells will crit, allowing you to chain together various combos as covered in more detail in the rotation section above.
Scorch should be used in place of Fireball while Combustion is active. The reasoning is simple:
In contrast, Scorch is very weak outside of Combustion for the same reasons. Since it has no travel time, you cannot efficiently fish for Pyroblasts.
Scorch can be cast while moving and also grants you a speed buff. Wherever possible, try to rely on Shimmer or Ice Floes before resorting to Scorch. The only exception is when your target is under 30% health, at which point you should use Scorch freely instead of Fireball.
You should use Culminating Blasphemite in one socket. Then, ensure you have one gem of each type in other sockets to maximize the Crit effect, ideally Quick Ruby, Quick Onyx, Quick Sapphire, and Versatile Emerald. Fill in remaining sockets with Versatile Emerald.
Truthfully, Culminating Blasphemite's actual DPS contribution is so minor that it is nearly irrelevant. An alternative option is to run Elusive Blasphemite for the extra run speed, following the same logic as choosing Speed enchants over Avoidance. This is a personal choice if you feel it is worthwhile.
You should be drinking the Flask of Tempered Swiftness at all times.
Your stat potion should be Tempered Potion. Use these when you will do the most damage with your abilities, likely during your cooldowns and/or Bloodlust/Heroism. You can also obtain Fleeting Tempered Potion from Cauldrons that can be spawned by Alchemists.
You should keep a stock of Invigorating Healing Potions to use when at low health, and if you have a Warlock in the group, grab their Healthstones and use them as well. Do not macro these together, they are best used separately! You can also obtain Fleeting Invigorating Healing Potion from Cauldrons that can be spawned by Alchemists.
You should be eating from a Feast at all times, either Feast of the Divine Day, Feast of the Midnight Masquerade, or Hearty Feast of the Midnight Masquerade.
If Feasts are not available, eat Outsider's Provisions, Beledar's Bounty, Jester's Board, or Empress' Farewell instead.
In addition, if you can afford it, you should use Crystallized Augment Rune to increase your primary stat. Augment Runes are expensive, and disappear on death, so use them wisely!

The Tier Set is comprised of 5 items of the Augur's Ephemeral Plumage set. Wearing 2 and 4 pieces from the set grants DPS bonuses based on your spec and Hero Talent choice.
Mage Sunfury 11.2 Class Set 2pc: Spellfire Spheres spell damage bonus increased by 1.0%. Mana Cascade now grants an additional 0.5% Haste per stack.
Mage Sunfury 11.2 Class Set 4pc: Exceptional spells cast by your Phoenix add an additional 0.3 sec to the duration of your next Hyperthermia. When your Phoenix expires, it empowers you further, granting Lesser Time Warp, which provides Haste and increased spell damage for 10 seconds.
Mage Frostfire 11.2 Class Set 2pc: Comet Storm and Frostfire Burst damage increased by 15%. Frostfire Bolt damage increased by 8%. Comet Storm, Frostfire Burst, and Frostfire Bolt now apply Ignite at 75% effectiveness.
Mage Frostfire 11.2 Class Set 4pc: Casting Pyroblast has a 20% chance to also cast a Glacial Spike dealing Frost damage. These Glacial Spikes do not root. Additionally, Glacial Spike now benefits from Ignite.
The Tier Set Bonus is absolutely mandatory for competitive play, and you should prioritize obtaining it. You can use the Matrix Catalyst to convert regular items (from Mythic+, for example) into Tier Items.
You only need 4 pieces out of 5 to get both set bonuses. We recommend picking all items except for the Helm due to its low Haste. Check out the BiS List for more details.

No, Fire Mages do not require specific amounts of Critical Strike or Haste to perform well. Thanks to passive talents like Pyrotechnics, which grants stacking Critical Strike, and abilities such as Critical Mass, Firestarter, and Searing Touch, Fire Mages can maintain consistent damage output even with low Critical Strike.
