What is the Blast Furnace?

In Old School RuneScape, the Blast Furnace is a members-only minigame that’s used primarily for smelting bars. Located in Keldagrim, this furnace offers the unique advantage of requiring only half the usual amount of coal when smelting ores. This makes it a top-tier spot for players looking to save on resources or increase their smelting efficiency.

There are currently 15 designated Blast Furnace worlds in OSRS. These worlds are run by NPC dwarves named Dumpy, Pumpy, Numpty, Thumpy, and Stumpy. Thanks to them, soloing the OSRS Blast Furnace is much easier—just focus on transporting ores to the conveyor belt and repeating the process.

Blast Furnace Requirements

To participate in the OSRS Blast Furnace, you must first start the Giant Dwarf quest. This grants access to Keldagrim, the city where the furnace is found. If your Smithing level is under 60, you'll need to pay 2,500 coins every 10 minutes to use the furnace. However, if your Smithing level is 60 or higher, the fee is waived.

You can reduce the fee to 1,250 coins by equipping a Ring of Charos and going through the Blast Furnace Foreman’s dialogue. To cool down your smelted bars, you can either use a bucket of water or wear ice gloves.

When using Blast Furnace-themed worlds, an extra fee of 72,000 coins per hour applies. You can either pay this directly to the Foreman or deposit coins into the coffer to cover it.

How to Reach the Blast Furnace

As previously mentioned, the furnace is located in Keldagrim. After starting the Giant Dwarf quest, you can reach it from Seers’ Village by heading east of Rellekka to the mine entrance. Once you’ve unlocked the location, you can also use the mine cart system under Ice Mountain or the Minigame Group Finder to return quickly.

Efficiency is key at the OSRS Blast Furnace, especially since you'll be constantly moving heavy ores and smelted bars. Wearing lightweight gear such as Boots of Lightness will help conserve your run energy. You’ll also benefit from items like stamina potions and a ring of endurance to maintain movement speed.

If you’re planning to smelt bars that require coal, a coal bag is essential. You can also buy ore from Ordan, who is located within the Blast Furnace area. And if needed, don’t hesitate to pay additional time to the Blast Furnace Foreman to extend your session.

How to Use the Blast Furnace

Once you’re inside the furnace area, place your coal and primary ores on the conveyor belt. Use a bucket of water or equip your ice gloves to cool the resulting bars. Then, collect them from the bar dispenser. After that, it’s simply a cycle of repeating the process.

Always keep your coal bag full. You can load a maximum of 254 coal into the furnace at one time, so preloading coal before adding other ores is a smart move. For bars like mithril, adamantite, and runite, you can only place 28 ores at once. If you exceed this limit without collecting bars, you’ll get an error message.

Also, don’t forget to collect gold bars when smelting for XP gains. Logging out with ore on the belt will cause you to lose the materials, so always finish a smelting cycle before leaving.

Making Money with Blast Furnace

The OSRS Blast Furnace isn’t just great for XP—it’s also a lucrative gold-making method. Depending on your Smithing level and what you’re smelting, you can earn a hefty profit per hour.

At level 15 Smithing, players can smelt up to 6,000 bars an hour for a profit of approximately 431,133 GP. Mithril bars nearly double that, and steel bars approach the 1 million GP/hour mark. If you're aiming for even higher profits, smelting adamantite or runite bars will push your earnings well above 1 million GP hourly. These also come with 101,250 and 107,500 XP respectively per hour.

To maximize these profits, consider investing in OSRS Gold ahead of time. Whether you're buying ores or gear to help boost your smelting sessions, having a solid stash of OSRS Gold can greatly improve efficiency.

If you need to buy ore, visit Ordan, the ore seller located downstairs in the Blast Furnace factory, on the eastern side of Keldagrim. The shop regularly stocks ores used for Smithing, and dwarf workers frequently replenish supplies in bulk. Once any ore reaches 100 in stock, the extras are placed into storage, ensuring consistent availability.

So there you have it—everything you need to succeed with the OSRS Blast Furnace. With the right preparation and strategy, you'll not only make great XP gains but also rake in some serious profits. Whether you're in it for the money, the skill training, or both, the OSRS Blast Furnace is a game-changer.
